Spiritual Journey

There’s a reason it’s called an Epic … “Ramayan becomes the highest watched TV serial in Hindi general entertainment category ever by garnering 170 million viewers” — Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC)

Happy Ram Navmi! The birthday of Lord Ram. Ram is a notion more than a person. His life personifies that good always triumphs over evil. His stories have been narrated from generation to generation. Through Ram Leelas, through Ramayan recitations, through TV serials, through grandma’s bedtime stories. Every kid in India knows who Ram is irrespective of their religion.

It’s Day 9 of the lockdown. It’s been a spiritual one although I’m not a religious person. I guess difficult times make us think of a higher power. God and I are good, it’s religion and religious practices that get my goat. People gather to spread their God’s word and land up spreading the virus. Especially now with the pandemic and social distancing I wish people were more spiritual than religious.

Having said that, life seems to have come a full circle. Had never imagined that Doordarshan will become an entertainment channel again. That we would be back to watching Ramayan, Byomkesh Bakshi, Mahabharat, like we did in our college days.

This wave of nostalgia is proving to be an excellent distraction from the ever-present bad news pouring out of every screen. Here’s hoping our 21 day vanvaas will be as successful as Ram’s 14 year one was.
