The 2020 Thanos

“Pretty, isn’t it? Perfectly balanced, as all things should be.” — Thanos to Gamora, Infinity War

On the 50th anniversary of Earth Day I cannot help but contemplate that the Corona virus is a ‘mini Thanos’. All that Thanos wanted was a balanced ecosystem. A universe where every species could live in harmony. His method may have been drastic, wiping out half of all life with a snap of his finger. But his solution seems to be spot on. ‘Earth is healing’ is the general consensus after nearly half the world has been locked down for almost a month.

It’s Day 29 of the lockdown. April 22nd has always been about our planet and the urgent need to protect it.

The limited human activity and transportation has been therapeutic for the environment. The Ganga looks visibly cleaner. Our flamingos are back in Navi Mumbai. Sea Turtles are hatching in peace on beaches. Wild boars have descended onto the streets in Barcelona. Wild goats have taken over a town in Wales. Whales have been sighted near France. Peacocks are everywhere. The sky is bluer. The air is cleaner. Nature is slowly transforming itself.

Makes us wonder are we the virus for Earth? Are we to the planet what this virus is to us?

As we desperately work towards finding a vaccine to help us, maybe this Earth Day we need to be that focused about our commitment towards the environment too.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.

“Little one, it’s simple calculus. This universe is finite, its resources, finite. If life is left unchecked, life will cease to exist.”
